I get cold sores way too often, it’s embrassing?

I have extremely sensitive lips. They dry and crack so easily that I have to apply lip balm to them a few times each day, or else they get scaled and sometimes bleed. The last cold sore I had was huge and I went to the doctor with it. He gave me a treatment for it and it still never went away until a whole week. I hate being seen with them, and now I’ve got another one. The doctor told me they are random and nothing can be done about them. I don’t have any physical contact with any other people, I’m 17 and wope up today and applied the lip balm as usual and later on a cold sore appeared. It’s like two small white bubbles at first and eventually they combine into one big one.

i understand what your feeling, i get them all the time, i went to the doctor and he gave me stuff for impetigo as it is stronger than cold sore stuff. unfortunately the only thing you can do is wait it out and do what you keep doing. i get them a lot when i am in buildings other than home as the air is dryer and infections go through air conditioners ewww

Cold sores are caused by a virus that never goes away. When you aren’t having an outbreak, the virus is hiding out in your cheek.
You should go get some abreva to put on the area when you first start feeling the tingle. It makes the outbreaks not as bad and not last as long. The longer you have the virus the less frequently it will break out. Stress, fever, and your period can cause a break out… in addition to the random, no reason break outs. If it gets to bad, or to frequent you can ask your dr for a perscription for valtrex.. but that is only in severe cases. It’s a pill you would take everyday to decrease the severity and frequency of outbreaks.

To much lip balm can also cause your lips to be chronically dry. Try switching to a different type of lip balm.

Also, you should throw away your lip balm if you use it during an outbreak. It will hold the virus and cause a future outbreak. You could carry around clean Q-tips and apply the balm with a clean one every time. That would help.

I used to get them heaps when I was younger but thankfully over the years they’ve lessened.
What I have found though is that getting a cold sore for me is a good indicator of how my body is coping. When I get sick, I get one – that’s almost guaranteed.
When I’m run down I am at risk of getting one so if I start to feel one coming I stop and take a good look at what I’m doing: not eating properly, not sleeping properly, stressed etc etc. I’ll take some multi vitamins, eat heaps of vegies and fruit and if I’m lucky, it’ll go away or be smaller than usual. Another thing to try is when you first feel it coming (or I feel tingling sometimes) get some ice onto it.

Oh, and the best treatment I ever used was a herbal one full of stuff like rosemary. Shame I can’t get it any more!

damn. i am only on this site because low and behold, I’ve got ANOTHER sore. Just out of the blue it appeared and it hurts like hell. I’ve gotten them since I was a baby and I am sure I’ll continue getting them as I get older. (22 now)…SO what I do for it..as soon as I start to feel a tingle I immediately apply Abreva and I also have a stash of Valtrex in my cabinet. The Valtrex does wonders, thank you whoever invented that medication. That’s really about all I do to treat a cold sore. Usually it’s gone in a few days, a week at the very latest. The valtrex speeds up the healing. If you come up with any other remedies please let me know. I get these things way too often and it is embarrising…
